The film industry has a well documented, and criticized, history of under-employing and under-representing women in certain aspects of production, specifically the lack of women working as directors. There are several organizations and publications that help combat and reverse the tide of institutionalized problems within the film industry.
The Breakthroughs film festival is one such organization that hopes to encourage the numerous and talented young women who are making films or starting to make films in Canada. The film festival deals solely with short films and is presented by the organization Octavia films: a nonprofit for women "that is dedicated to promoting women filmmakers in Canada". It runs on June 13th, 2014 from 7:30pm to 10:30pm. If you are interested in supporting up and coming young women filmmakers be sure to check out their website.
CINSSU is a partner of the festival and we sincerely hope that you check out the festival program.
